Technical FAQs Implementation FAQs

1. How can I check connectivity to FedEx servers?

Point your browser to the following URL, https://gatewaybeta.fedex.com/us/about/index.html You should see the About FedEx web page.

2. What is required from my proxy server?

If a proxy server is used to connect to the Internet, the address and port number of that server are required. Without this information, FedEx Ship Manager API cannot communicate outside of your network. During your installation, you will be asked for your proxy host and proxy port. You may need to check with your system administrator.

3. Are the transactions secure?

FedEx Ship Manager API applications use SSL encryption technology to help secure your Internet transactions.

4. How are the transactions formatted?

The FedEx tagged transaction set appears as a series of comma-delimited fields using numeric indicators that precede each data element.

For example: 0,"402"29,"79382022020"50,"US"24,"19980711"99,””

This is a FedEx tagged request to perform a track transaction (402) to track shipment number 79382022020, which was shipped to the U.S. on July 11,1998. Our server would return the information in a similar format to be read by the application. You will find complete transaction details in the Transaction Guide.

You can use the FedEx Ship Manager API Parser or the Java Transaction Classes to build these tagged requests and to parse the tagged responses.

5. What operating systems does FedEx Ship Manager API support?

FedEx Ship Manager API runs on the following operating systems:
Microsoft 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP
Sun Solaris™ 2.6 or higher

8. Can I use a dial-up connection with the API?

Yes. If you are using a dial-up connection to connect with an ISP for an Internet connection, you should not have a problem with utilizing the API.

9. Is there a way to connect with FedEx without using the FedEx Ship Manager API software?

Yes, there is a method known as Use Your Own API that allows you to develop and configure your very own HTTPS protocol connection to FedEx.

A working knowledge of HTTP, SSL, and socket programming is required to implement this solution.

10. If I am using Use Your Own API to communicate with FedEx, can I use the FedExAPI Parser and FedExAPI Label Extensions tools in my application?

Yes. These tools are available as a separate download.
